Fleeing Persecution

As told in Surah Al-Kahf, a group of young men lived in a society that worshipped idols and persecuted those who believed in one God. To preserve their faith, they fled to a nearby cave, seeking refuge from a tyrannical ruler.

A Miraculous Sleep

Inside the cave, the young men fell into a deep sleep. Allah caused the sun to shift away from directly striking them, and their dog lay at the entrance, appearing as though it were guarding them. What felt like a single day of sleep lasted for over three hundred years.

Waking to a Changed World

When they eventually woke, believing only a short time had passed, they sent one among them into the town to buy food — only to discover that generations had passed, the ruler and his oppressive rule were long gone, and belief in one God was now openly practiced.

The Lesson

The story of Ashab-e-Kahf demonstrates Allah's power over time and life, offers reassurance that steadfastness in faith during hardship is rewarded, and serves as a sign of the reality of resurrection — that just as these youths were brought back to a changed world after centuries, all people will be resurrected after death.
