The Story of Dhul-Qarnayn
A ruler given power across the earth — and the humility to use it justly.
A Question Brought to the Prophet ﷺ
The story of Dhul-Qarnayn enters the Quran through a question — people asked Prophet Muhammad ﷺ about him, and Allah revealed his account in response, describing a figure granted 'a way to everything' (Surah Al-Kahf 18:83-84), immense power and means across the earth.
Justice at the Setting of the Sun
Dhul-Qarnayn traveled west until he reached a place where the sun appeared to set, and among a people he found there, he ruled with striking justice — punishing wrongdoing but rewarding righteousness generously, never letting power tempt him into tyranny.
A People Facing Ruin
Eventually his travels brought him to a people terrorized by Ya'juj and Ma'juj (Gog and Magog), who caused corruption and destruction wherever they went. The people begged Dhul-Qarnayn for help, offering him payment for protection.
A Barrier Built Without Payment
Dhul-Qarnayn refused their payment, saying what Allah had already given him was better, and instead asked only for their labor. Together they built a massive barrier of iron and molten copper, sealing off the threat completely (Surah Al-Kahf 18:94-97).
Crediting Allah, Not Himself
After completing this extraordinary feat, Dhul-Qarnayn didn't claim the achievement as his own triumph — he attributed it entirely to Allah's mercy, acknowledging that the barrier, like everything he had, was ultimately a gift, not a personal accomplishment.
Why This Story Still Matters
Dhul-Qarnayn's story shows what enormous power looks like in righteous hands — used to protect the vulnerable, refuse unnecessary reward, and credit Allah rather than oneself for every success.
