Qiyam (Standing Position in Prayer)
The standing position in which Surah Al-Fatiha and other verses are recited.
What Is Qiyam?
Qiyam refers to the standing position at the start of each rak'ah (unit) of prayer. It is one of the essential pillars (arkan) of Salah for those who are physically able to stand. During Qiyam, the worshipper recites Surah Al-Fatiha, followed by another portion of the Quran in the first two rak'ahs.
What Is Recited During Qiyam?
After the opening Takbir, the worshipper recites an opening supplication (Thana), seeks refuge from Satan (Ta'awwuz), says Bismillah, then recites Surah Al-Fatiha — the opening chapter of the Quran — followed by another Surah or a portion of the Quran, most commonly in the first two rak'ahs of any prayer.
Standing When Unable
Islam accommodates those who cannot stand due to illness or physical limitation — such a person may pray sitting, and if unable to sit, lying down, with the reward for the prayer preserved according to their ability.
