Sujood (Prostration) in Prayer
The prostration performed twice in every rak'ah, considered the closest position to Allah.
What Is Sujood?
Sujood is the prostration in which the forehead, nose, both palms, both knees, and toes touch the ground. It is performed twice in every rak'ah, with a brief sitting (Jalsa) in between. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that a servant is nearest to their Lord while in prostration, so this is an excellent time to make personal supplication (dua).
What Is Said in Sujood?
While prostrating, it is recommended to say "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High) at least three times, reflecting the humility of placing the highest part of the body — the forehead — on the ground before Allah.
Why Sujood Is Special
Sujood represents the deepest physical expression of submission and humility in Islam. Because it is the position of closest nearness to Allah, worshippers are encouraged to make abundant personal dua while prostrating, in any language.
